There are many types of tank cars; however, the two major categories are pressure cars and non-pressure cars.

Pressure car selection is typically product driven, with car volumes and dimensions that are generally pre-selected.

The wide range of non-pressure cars includes both general purpose and commodity specific equipment. Non-pressure car design considerations include volumetric capacity, load limit and gross rail load, dimensions, fittings, heater coils, insulation and interior coatings.
